The Crown Heights North Association, Inc.  (CHNA) is a non-profit organization formed in 2002 by a small group of neighbors seeking landmark protection for their neighborhood. 20-plus years later, our interest is still historic preservation and we have expanded our mission to include preserving our cultural heritage, protecting seniors from deceptive real estate practices and partnering with other CHN organizations for the betterment of the entire community. Pride. Preservation. Community. Roots. We are Crown Heights Proud.

PRESERVATION  NEWS

We haven't stopped our landmarking work . Next Up:  We are now advocating for the final phase – the neighborhood called “Crow Hill.”

While Crow Hill is technically part of Crown Heights North, it retains its own unique history and identity. Landmarking Crow Hill is a preservation priority for CHNA.

Tax Incentives for Preserving Historic Properties
The Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program encourages private sector investment in the rehabilitation and re-use of historic buildings. It creates jobs and is one of the nation's most successful and cost-effective community revitalization programs. It has leveraged $131.73 billion in private investment to preserve more than 49,000 historic properties since 1976. The National Park Service, through its Technical Preservation Services division, and the Internal Revenue Service administer the program in partnership with State Historic Preservation Offices.

We have lots going on this year-  keep checking back for announcements

CHNA is pleased to announce that the Crow Hill neighborhood has been selected as the study area for a Pratt Institute Historic Preservation graduate program Spring 2025 class.  The Historic Preservation Studio I: Heritage Documentation students will be learning how to research and document buildings while exploring the historic, architectural, cultural and economic life of the neighborhood. CHNA will be their hosts and guides, as students and community members work together to document and understand this historic and rapidly changing Brooklyn neighborhood. Landmarking initiatives, the Atlantic Avenue Rezoning, affordable housing and rapid gentrification all contribute to the story the class will tell in their project at semester’s end. Students and faculty will be visiting the neighborhood often to complete assignments and learn as much as possible from the physical environment and the people who live in it. We hope you will welcome them.
